I love it. Not only does it have an awesome quirky elevator-music soundtrack from Jon Brion, the genius behind the music in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", but the movie does a wicked satire of existential philosophy, and philosophy in general. It was really well-cast - one of those flicks in which every actor really fits their character. The Existential Detectives are the kind of people you hate to love and love to hate - annoying, pretentious, bossy and amused. I love Jude Law's character's slow falling-apart, the weird Shania Twain inclusion, and the hilarious fantasy sequences.

But my favourite part is when Albert (or whatever his name was, the main character) is forced to confront the childhood memory of when his cat died and his mother forced him to spell words for a visitor although he wanted to cry about his cat. That reminds me of how we always brush aside those sad or hurtful childhood memories, laughing them off because childhood seems stupid to us...but in doing so, we betray the children we once were; the children who wept and struggled and were frightened; we become the same monstrous adults we hated as kids. That part of the movie reminds me to always take seriously those childhood events, because things that were profound in our past still make up parts of who we are now.

Anyway, the fact that the movie discusses the divide between the "everything is connected" happy philosophy and the "everything is meaningless" angst philosophy is great.

Tommy Corn: What are you doing tomorrow?
Albert Markovski: I was thinking about chaining myself to a bulldozer. Do you want to come?
Tommy Corn: What time?
Albert Markovski: Mmm... one, one-thirty.
Tommy Corn: Sounds good. Should I bring my own chains?
Albert Markovski: We always do.

I didn't like the philosophy involved. I think it was trying to find a middle ground between modernism and post-modernism.
