Before he became a sailor he was a barber. That was why he chose the name Barbados for the first islands he discovered. He later took the "r" off of the word "razors" and called the next island chain the "Azores". He never forgot his roots, and was very popular as a ships barber, and the crew of the Mayflower were considered the best groomed sailors in history.

Columbus didn't discover the Mississippi River. That was Hernando de Soto.
As for what Columbus did, he discovered the Americas and got people interested in the New World, though he was only looking for a sea route to India.
