I agree. Many try to avoid conflict as a natural response to avoid danger. This may be related to survival instinct.

Many have been raised to speak up for themselves but it's hard when you can't do it at home. Most of this is the environment and whether the child or offspring can communicate without fear.

I've made it to where all of my kids ages 8 to 21 are all able to tell me anything.

Believe me there are some things a parent doesn't want to hear from their child but it's all worthwhile. They can talk to me without fear of reprisal or fear of a discussion.

I'll take the information and think about it long and hard before I counsel them.

I took the fear out of it and they're trusting me!!!!!

I think most people are conformists and you can't blame them. It's dangerous to go against the grain. Look at revolutionaries, Ghandi, Dr.King, Rosa Parks, Gay activists, Civil Rights Activists etc. Any type of political or social stance that is unpopular or that is threatening to the the oppressors of societies usually leads to these brave individuals paying with their lives in some form or another.

I agree with your post but I think it would be better to give credit to those who are brave and stand up to the oppressors. I think most people don't even realize how oppression works; it is VERY complex (read Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed). To call most people cowards is unfair in my opinion. A more accurate statement might be most people are easily influenced and thus conform to society. Standing up to the oppressors is a dangerous act but it is important to do this if you have the courage and desire to do so.

yes. everyone isnt just generally a coward, but specifically a coward. when you have the ability to stop a wrong, but dont, you are a coward. when you try to blame shift, you are a coward. when you have to lie you are a coward.
in the political context you put it, theres no cowardice in self preservation. mr. bin laden will get his head blown off if he sticks it out of a cave, just as mr bush will get shot as soon as he leaves his secret service guards. its not really cowardice in that case, but necesity

There is such a thing as intelligence. You wouldn't really fight a battle you can't win would you? You do that all the time and soon enough you'll have nothing.
