just drop their garbage wherever they feel like it. I mean who looks after these people when they are at home? Do you think that the 'permissive parenting' of our generation has led to this lack of regard for other people...plus the fact that they seem to think that everything is disposable (and renewable)? I don't want to sound elderly ("and ANOTHER THING") by asking this question. I'm only 57...but does anyone else have any comments?

I am so with you. I'm 28 and my biggest stress factor is the litter that I have to pick up. The neighbor kids have got me really angry over this. I'm really laid back, and this issue has never came up in my life before last year.
Argh.
My son has to go outside and pick up his peers garbage. I went to their mother and I have a feeling that whole permissive parenting this is going on. I can't type anymore this is a sore subject with me.

I remember people being trashy whenever I was younger too (I'm only 25, but still). I think that permissive parenting *might* have something to do with it, but I also think that people are like this wherever you go...except Singapore, of course.

I've personally trained my students to pick up any kind of litter from the school grounds that they see. At one point they were fighting over who got to pick up dead leaves from a potted plant in the hallway! Come to think of it, when I was in elementary school, we had a huge Litter Awareness type day where people dressed up as litter bugs and teachers, students, and parents cleaned up the entire campus. In my 3 years of teaching, I've attended ONE play about litter. Maybe it really is becoming an issue again. :(

Just imagine their homes at how trashy it may be. I used to live in a complex that was like that -garbage all over and what not..in fact someone had literally once left a messy diaper on the ground and left there leftover Mc Donald's on the ground so the critters could come and forage. Of course no one was ever caught in the act, and our landlord was blind to all that was going on. I was raised to pick up behind my self and respect others, if it's not mine keep it cleaned up. I'm only 33 and can't believe how people are so messy these days.

Its the upbringing. These days kids maintain their rooms like pigsty. There is absolutely no order in their rooms. They just want to dump everything, everywhere. Its just plain laziness. If the parents inculcate neatness and cleanliness from their childhood, then perhaps the kids can develop a sense of orderliness around. Its in the hands of the parents. They are responsible.

i totally agree. i'm a lot younger than you but feel like (certain) "kids these days" are very careless when it comes to litter. it saddens me to see it in nature, especially. i'm thinking they were never taught to appreciate nature and beauty? sad.
