Well, you could try putting little reminders around, about why you want to. Write or put pictures on index cards. Choose anything you want, a magazine photo of a person doing the job you want to do, pictures of the car you want to afford, a short list of things that you want to earn and do in life, the name of the college you want to attend, whatever. Put them in places where you study, in your books, and stuff. But also put them in places where you waste time, like by the TV or video games, or computer, or whatever. You could ask for help from friends. Friends who study hard and talk about college plans, tend to "rub off" on others, if you spend more time with them.

If you can't get "motivated" then you might try for "disciplined." Practice forcing yourself to stick to a routine, including getting school studies done. Make yourself a schedule and ask your parents to help you stick to it. Or ask friends, if hearing it from your parents wouldn't work for you. Expect it to take a month or two, before it's a real strong habit, and you don't need so much reminding and encouraging and nagging.

Education is not just about grades. Many of the lessons I learned in school were related to social skills and not just academics. That being said, grades are a way to track how you are doing in school, so they are important. Good grades do not just show that you are understanding the subject material; they also indicate that you are disciplined enough to show up and participate more than the average person.

For day to day motivation, set small achievable goals. A goal must be specific, measurable, and have a deadline. "I'll do the best I can" is not an effective goal, because there is no way to measure it. "I will read two chapters every night so I can finish the book by next Tuesday" is easier to track.

Give yourself punishment and rewards. "I'll finish writing my essay by 9:00 pm or I'll eat dog food. If I finish by 8:30, I'll have ice cream." Share your goal with someone who can hold you accountable. It sounds silly, but it is often effective.

Write down your goals and committments and tape them to the bathroom mirror or somewhere where they will serve as reminders. Tell your teachers that you want to do well in school, and ask for their advice. They'll be thrilled.

Work hard to do well in school because it will open up options for you in the future. Put youself in a position of choice. It is not fun to be struggling and wishing that you had worked harder in the past. A little extra effort today can multiply into many positive results for your future. What you do today matters. Discipline weighs ounces, regret weighs tons.

Ask someone to provide you with some sort of external motivation (since it appears you lack internal or self-motivation). Like make a deal, if you receive certain grades, you get this privilege or this object.

Of course you have to accept that doing well at school is better than doing poorly. If you don't see this as necessarily true, you might be completely out of luck.

Find a goal for yourself to reach in the future. Figure out how school will help you achieve that goal. Make a commitment to yourself to reach that goal. Pay attention in class. Really try to learn. Find reason to CARE about what you are learning. Get help in classes that are hard for you. If you're bored learning stuff you already know, help explain it to others. If you plan to go to college/get a good job, that's a reason.

This is an easy one.
1st) Think about what you want to accomplish with your life.
2nd) Get a job typical of a high school student (Fast food, stocking, etc)
3rd) Think about whether or not you would be happy making that kind of money and doing that job for the rest of your life (think about future expenses too!)

If you are happy with where you are at making the money and living the life of your current education (forever) then be happy and don't worry about it. Chances are, however, that you are going to realize that is not your ideal life. (In the end don't think about the money as much as what you are going to be doing day after day after day after day...it's even more dedication than marriage...)

If you are in high school, set yourself goals and strive to meet them. If you are in college, think of all the money you are wasting if you get bad grades and have to retake classes. You could also tell yourself this if you are in high school.
