I volunteer for 6 hours a week at a bird rescure center, but sometimes it just seems like that's doing so little! I also pick up litter whenever I see it, but that just doesn't seem like enough!

Begin by finding a way to be financially self-sufficient. Take care of yourself first, and then you will be in the best position to help others. If you can make a career plan that allows you to earn a living while you are helping others, so much the better.
As for exactly how you would make the world a better place, that depends on what's important to you. Ask yourself, if I could make a wish and one thing about the world would change, what would it be? Less poverty? Less sickness? A cleaner environment? Less crime? Less war? More education? More political freedom? More laughter?
Everyone can make the world a better place according to therir own gifts. A singer does it through his music. A writer does it through his words. A lawyer does it by seeking justice in court. A businessman does it by contributing to charity, or conducting business according to a code of ethics. A teacher does it by enabling and inspiring others.
Figure out what your gifts are, and how you can use them to change the world in ways you care about.

You can not change the entire world but you can change things around you, which does make the world a better place. Work on looking for the good in people. Help people who are down on their luck. Make some food for homeless shelters, send clothing or blankets to impoverished areas, volunteer for housing projects to build new homes or fix older ones, there are many more projects that you could join. Humanity is being changed little by little all the time, be a part of that change and give of yourself to others. I do, and it is making a difference. I feel compassion and hope - in myself and others around me. Try and put others first - if you want to be ambitious, be ambitious towards how much you can do for others, it could change in small and perhaps large ways humanity and society as well. Best wishes.

What you're really asking is:
1) "What does it mean for the world to be a better place?" and
2) "How can I make the world a better place?"
If you know the answer to the first question, you can find your own answer to the second. I'll answer both of these questions.
1) When you say "the world", do you mean every place from Zimbabwe to Shanghai to London to Argentina? Do you mean the world which you encounter in your own experience? Or something else?
It can be easy to jump on a social activist bandwagon and put your sweat into a cause (usually political). How important is it to you, really, to end starvation in Uganda or keep the snowy owl from becoming extinct?
Neither of these things is part of your personal experience, your own "world". You wouldn't even know about them without someone else telling you (by way of the TV or magazines). The only world that matters is the one with which you interact every day. To improve this world, you have to increase your understanding of life and your place in it.
2) Increase your understanding of yourself and your place in the world around you.
Everything wrong in the world is a product of humans' wrong thinking. For example, if they understood how important the ecosystem around them is to their own survival, they would act accordingly with regard to it.
The more rightly you think, the more your right thinking will rub off onto other people. That's how the world changes for the better--not only your own, but other people's, too.

There are so many ways you can help:
Donate one day per month in a soup kitchen serving food to the homeless.
Donate time in a nursing home reading to the elderly.
Get involved in many of the really good charities out there such as Make A Wish foundation, Juvenile Diabetes, Etc.
There are so many ways just a little time can make a big difference... just try a few things and let your heart lead the way.
Good luck to you...

The best way to make a difference in the world is to submit yourself to God who knows all and leads His children by His Spirit. The things He would have you do will accomplish infinitely more than anything you could ever contrive on your own. He has a plan and a purpose for each and every person. He gave you gifts, but that is only the beginning. You have a destiny in Him and you are so special to Him.

You could become a true Christian and spread the Word of God so that other people would know and show REAL love. Real love does not always mean that you will be kind because sometimes the truth hurts for those who do not want to know the truth. To be a TRUE Christian means that you are born again (of the spirit not of the womb) by accepting the precious blood of Jesus as your payment for your sins and that you will be going to Heaven because of His sacrifice and not your good deeds or work.

Read some basic economics, history, and international relations. It will give you perspective on the state of the world, its past, and hopefully you will be able to derive the best future for it. Then, try to promote that vision by creating or even promoting new technologies and/or arts. This can be used loosely, as even a work of fiction will last forever.

You can not make the world a better place because people are going to do what they want to do no matter what. Try being the best person you can be and let society handle itself.

The fact that you wish to make changes speaks volumes of you. But let me remind you what Mother Theresa once said, "We can do no great things; only small things with great love."
Your work as a bird rescue volunteer is commendable. Try to love your non- feathered homo- sapiens more...Now THAT'S a challenge!!!
Peace be with you....
