Mold is the symptom, water is the problem. There is a substantial amount of water in your bathroom. It may be simply condensation from improper ventilation, or it could be something far more serious. You could douse the mold with bleach for the appearance of a solution, but I strongly recommend an on-site investigation by someone with training in mold remediation.

For example, if your shower pan has been leaking for several years, there may be stachybotrys fungi present, which produces a mycotoxin that can make you and your family very ill.

In any event, it is important to isolate this area from the rest of your home, before all your living spaces are contaminated with mold spores. For the sake of the health of your family, I recommend that you consult with a Certified Mold Remediator.

It sounds like your walls have mold growing inside from a previous leak or poor ventilation in the bathroom. Since mold produces harmful spores that can make you sick, you will want to attack it at the source.

The best thing you can do would be to plan on a bathroom remodel, but before you start ripping the drywall off or hire a contractor to do the work, you should contact a mold professional to advise you on how to completely kill the mold at the source. You should also get advice on how to remove all of the spores safely without compromising your or your family's health. Once you start tearing out walls and cleaning the mold, harmful spores will become airborne. Anyone in the house during that time should be wearing a good dust mask or better yet, have a mold remediation specialist come in and eradicate your bathroom of mold while you are on vacation.

Good luck!

This time of year I could have a problem with mold due to the high humidity. I bought a de-humidifier and it works great. It is amazing how much moisture it pulls out of the air daily! As far as cleaning up the mold, use a bathroom cleaner with bleach in it. Bleach is about the only thing that will kill mold and mildew.

Chlorine bleach solution in water will remove mold. Insure good ventilation and respirator mask if possible (as for spray painting) while you work. To keep mold problems from recurring, don't let humidity become a problem. Use fan and open windows to ventilate.

You can use the methods other people are telling you, they work. But you will probly need to rip out all walls ond replace.Because even when it drys,if it drys, you will still have mold spores that will make you ill .that's one thing. First find the leak. Could be roof leak running down walls ,could be leaking pipes in wall.Have to rip them out any way.And in addition you'll have to put in a exhaust fan if you don't have one.Just remember, cleaning won't solve problem.

You need to keep the fan running in the bathroom or open a window. In the rainy season you need to run an extra fan in there.

When you do go to clean it with a bleach cleaner, wear a mask over mouth and nose or you'll end up with a sore throat/cold.
