Everybody loves Stephen King. Why?

Even non-readers call him their favorite author. Is it because there is so much sex in the books that doesn't make it into the movie?

This is going to sound really strange, but I've read all his horror and didn't really appreciate him until I saw Shawshank Redemption, which he wrote the screenplay for. This is my favorite movie. I find some of his most brilliant writing in this, particularly in the lines he writes for the character of Red. They appear simplistic, but in context- well... I've seen the movie over a hundred times, and it never fails to inspire "goosebumps"- and not for fear. He (Morgan Freeman, as "Red" says, "I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope"

Simple, but great. More complex and excellent writing comes as Red reflects on the incident where the music is played for the prisoners.

His books have an appeal that can only be understood by like minds. I have read him for years even under his other names. Every book he has ever written has some reference to some character or place or thing in other books if you understand and can follow his warped path through his thinking process. Try reading his Gun Slinger series it really is some of his best work . I honestly do not think that sex is a problem in any of his writings in fact sex is usually just a small part of what the main story is all about it may contain it but the over all suspense of the books far out way the amount of sex he includes.

There is hardly any sex in Stephen King...and it's not a major plot point when there is some. The man is brilliant, writing more about how our fears play tricks with our minds than blood and gore, really. Read the Dark Tower series or The Stand. He hasn't been a bestselling author for thirty years for nothing.

The plot is always good and he develops the characters so well. There is very little sex in his books. The movies are never as good as the books, and some of the movies really were awful.

Nah. He writes ok. Its fast moving and he paints his scenes well.

I personally can't read his stuff. He's too screwed up in the head. THe horrible things he thinks up. Worse though to me is his hatred of dogs. He almost always has a dog suffer and die in some horrible way.

Now he can write some interesting things. Bag of Bones, Shining and Shawshank Redemption are pretty good. But thats just a few out of all the mess.

he's not a great writer, his books are long, drawn out, boring, badly written, and lack depth. he releases a new 1000 page book every other month, which shows how long he spend writing them. even the movies based on his books rarely turn out to be good. example: dreamcatcher. worst movie ive ever seen.

I'm not interested in the sex and violence in it. Personally, I like reading his stuff for the characters. I practically cried when Nick Andros was killed in The Stand!

He writes more toward the way people actually talk and think...this makes the connection- then the story takes them away
