Darwinism, that is your query...

PS Not a stupid question; many university, and educated humans, ask it daily! (and make big $ doing so...)

Well, the fossil record shows that things change. It is a common mistake among Creationists that Evolution means that things always improve. This isn't true. Things can become bigger or more complex but they can also become simpler. For example, spiders and parasites are retro-adaptive. That is they are lacking what their ancestors had. After spiders adapted to feeding by sucking the digested body fluids from their prey they've been unable to get back out. In other words, spiders are not able to re-evolve chewing mouth parts. Changes in animal species and the environment are what we see in the fossil record. Creationism says that nothing has really changed.

It's not a matter of proof, but of evidence. Fossils provide evidence to support the Theory of Evolution. They do this first by showing that new species periodically arise and go extinct. Secondly, one can observe life forms that appear to change in form, yet are clearly related, in the fossil record, through time.

Theories aren't proven, they are confirmed. To date, there hasn't been a theory that fits with the observations and makes predictions quite as nicely as evolution does, and so it is the (massively) predominant theory among the acedemia today.
