I'm not sure myself. For a really long time it was Waterworld, then Titanic, then another movie that I can't remember. More than likely the title's been stolen a third or fourth time. I read that the new king Kong is only the 6th most expensive movie of all time.

Please note this first list takes yearly inflation into account. I did a quick net search and Forbes lists the 15 most expensive films of **all time** ( as of 2005) as:

1) Cleopatra (1963)

2) Titanic

3) Waterworld

4) Terminator 3 - Rise of the machines

5) Spiderman 2

6) Wild Wild West

7) Speed 2

8) 13th Warrior

9) Troy

10) The Polar express

11) Armageddon

12) Leathal Weapon 4

13) Van Helsing

14) Superman (1978 version)

15) The Matrix Reloaded

Sarah Fisher lists these films as the most expensive ever and includes more recent films such as the new Superman movie. Films listed from least expensive to most expensive:

10) Armageddon (1998), Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), Pearl Harbor (2001), Final Fantasy (2001), Treasure Planet (2002), Men in Black II (2002) - $140 million.

9) Die Another Day (2002) $142 million.

8) Speed 2 (1997), Tarzan (1999), Polar Express (2004), Alexander (2004), Batman Begins (2005), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) - $150 million.

7) Van Helsing (2004) - $160 million

6) Waterworld (1995), Wild Wild West (1999), Terminator 3 (2003) - $175 million.

5) Troy (2004) - $185 million

4) Titanic (1997), Dinosaur (2000), Spiderman 2 (2004) - $200 million

3) Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001) - $300 million

2) Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire (2005) - $305 million

1) Superman Returns (2006) - (still in production) An estimated $326 million!

The answer is superman returns. the budget was 203 million, plus the studio had already accumulated 60 million in fees for the movie by trying to get it made three other times. check it out at entertainment weekly. the issue with superman on the cover goes into detail about it.

It's not exactly known but generally believed that the most expensive film to date is Spider-Man 3. Films are made by private companies and by public companies too. Private companies are not required to disclose nearly as much as publicly held companies. So, really, no one actually knows how much some films cost to make except for the people writing the checks to make the films.
