Fireworks construction takes time, practice, and lots of chemicals. I've included a few links below that might help you start out. Also, look for a books titled "Introductory Practical Pyrotechnics." It's a good started book.

That said, there are lots of things you need to keep in mind to start with.

It is *NOT* illegal to make fireworks for your own use. Note I said fireworks. M-80s and cherry bombs and such are considered to be explosives by the government, and the making of such items *is* illegal. In today's terrorism-wacko world, you don't want to temp Big Brother by going there...

However, if you don't plan to use your newly created fireworks right away, you'll need to store them. And storage is highly regulated. By both the Federal and State governments. And the ATFE. And Lord knows who else. You need to be aware of and comply with all the regulations or you're going to have problems.

Making fireworks is dangerous. Some of the compounds you'll be working with are toxic. Some compositions will ignite if you so much as breathe on them strangely. Improper handling of items and compounds can result in injury or death. Not saying you shouldn't try it - but be aware of the risks.

That said, here's the links....

Gee, I love to read questions like yours on Answers. LISTEN UP, DUMMY!!! It's illegal, it's extremely dangerous, and it's downright stupid to try to make your own fireworks. I have had an Explosives License for many years, and can tell you IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that if you are lucky, you won't blow yourself up!!! Be like everyone else, either go to a state where fireworks are sold legally, or just sit back and watch the professionals shoot the fireworks.

look on the internet. try google. people have been making black powder for centuries. if you live near a farm it should be fairly easy to get the materials. then look on a science/chemistry site to see what metals make what colors. you can then get a file and grind down some metal to add to the powder. you're almost there. read up on some physics and chemistry to see how you want to "package" your fireworks for the best display.

better yet, just buy them from the chinese. they're the best at making them.

I'm sure someone will tell you what you want to know, I want to supplement their answer.

Be sure you have up to date medical insurance. The likelihood of getting SEVERLY burned or losing a couple of body parts is significantly higher on days when you are making your own fireworks.

Invest in a quality fire extinguisher and wire a phone with '911' programmed into speed dial to the area where you will be working.

Wear eye protection. Granted, the rest of you will be a horrible, horrible nightmare of charred flesh, but at least you'll be able to see.

Be certain your homeowner's or renter's policy is up to date. You might want to add optional coverage for working with volatile substances. Don't surprised if they are reluctant to cover such activity.

Other than that, have fun. 10 fingers are far too many, I always say.

not a very suggestable hobby. You'd have to work in a very clean environment and not wear anything that might cause a spark - ie anything that generates static electricity. You'd probably get charged with possesion of dangerous/bomb making materials under the new terrorism act, so it might be in your best interest to just forget about it.

If you are in the USA, don't try it unless you want the FBI showing up at your door.
