There are many possibilities as how an internet speed can go slow. Try clearing up all your internet cache, history and delete files including the offline ones from the General tap of the internet options (internet explorer tools menu.) If you have no routers or splitters and your cable is directly connected to your computer then try resetting(usually pressing and holding and releasing of the rest button) and power cycling (unplugging it for 30 secs at least.) then repair your connection from the My Network Places.
By right clicking on your connection and choosing repair.
Hope this helps, if not try contacting your ISP(internet provider) and check with them if there is nothing wrong with the service. If nothing of the above works and your interent has been working fine before and suddenly slowed down and nothing is wrong with the service you might have to consider changing your modem.

Is it connected to Usb port? If so then your connection will be slow. Else remove the software of you Bband and then re-install it and check the speed of access.

512k broadband is still not that fast.. I have 24mbps (ADSL2+) and if the Internet is slow then it doesn't matter how fast your connection is unfortunately. OK? Good luck!
