Transgender is an overarching term applied to a variety of individuals, behaviors, and groups involving tendencies that diverge from the gender role (woman or man) commonly, but not always, assigned at birth.
1 - Transgender is the state of one's "gender identity" (self-identification as male, female, both or neither) not matching one's "assigned gender" (identification by others as male or female based on physical/genetic sex).
2 - Transvestite - heterosexual males (that is, male-bodied, male-identified, gynophilic persons) who wear traditionally feminine clothing. This group was not particularly happy with the term transvestism. Therefore the term cross-dresser was coined.
3- Transsexualism is a condition in which a transsexual person self-identifies as a member of the gender opposite to the one assigned to them at birth. Transsexual people are stereotypically described as "women trapped in male bodies" or vice versa, although some members of the transsexual community, as well as some outside the community, reject this model.

A transgender someone born as male but who are really female or female but really male.... its kinda hard to explain.. Basically they believe they are born into the wrong body...

First a transvestite. This is simply a person who dresses in the clothes (including wigs and makeup usually) of the opposite sex. She or he may be gay, bi, straight or whatever. Drag Queens fit into this category.
An Transgendered person is one who identifies mentally and emotionally as the opposite gender of his or her actual birth.
A Transexual is a transgendered person who lives as the opposite gender as that of his birth, often with the help of hormone therapy and/or sexual reassignment surgery. (Sex change)

transgender and transexual are one of the same...transvestite are just someone who like to dress up as opposite sex. mostly men and mostly straightmen who are turn on by wearing women clothes...besides that, female impersonator or drag queens who enjoy playing as an exaggerated female role for attention getting. transgender or transexual are individuals who are psychologically opposite of their physical sex and who wanted physically to change their assigned genders.

transsexual - a person who has undergone, or wants to undergo, sex reassignment surgery, and all the other steps necessary to transition to the other gender, including taking hormones
transgendered - encompasses a larger spectrum than transsexual; includes people who live as the other gender without taking some or all of the medical steps necessary for complete transition, as well as people who think the 2-gender system is too restrictive; can even include transvestites
transvestite - someone who enjoys dressing in the clothing and wearing the accoutrements of the other gender but does not want to physically or medically change gender; usually done for erotic purposes or for entertainment; usally prefer to be called crossdressers

a transgendered person is someone who is one sex but identifies as the opposite gender (physically male,mentally female or vice versa)
a transvestite is someone who cross dresses for sexual or emotional reasons but feels they are the right gender.they just do it for comfort
and a transsexual (2 S's) is someone transgendered who lives as there preferred gender but was born with the wrong sex whether they went through surgery or just live everyday life as their preferred gender.

transvestite= wears clothes of opposite sex(not neces gay)
transsexual= changed their sex medically/surgically
