Millions of men, women and children around the world are forced to lead lives as slaves. Although this exploitation is often not called slavery, the conditions are the same. People are sold like objects, forced to work for little or no pay and are at the mercy of their 'employers'.
Slavery exists today despite the fact that it is banned in most of the countries where it is practised. It is also prohibited by the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1956 UN Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery. Women from eastern Europe are bonded into prostitution, children are trafficked between West African countries and men are forced to work as slaves on Brazilian agricultural estates. Contemporary slavery takes various forms and affects people of all ages, sex and race.

xirekaj: What about the millions of children being sold for sex. What choice do they have. Or the women who are kidnapped and threatened with death or the death of a love one. Do they have a choice. Stop turning a blind eye to the truth.

I think there are several reasons slavery exists today. The first being that it is used as a way to pay off debts. For example, in parts of Asia, it is common for families to sell their daughters into prostitution so they can have money to pay off debts (or even just to eat).

Another reason slavery is still around is because of immoral people. There are people who see no problem kidnapping children out of villages to work in factories. There are people who have no problem "sponsoring" someone from abroad to live in America, but instead enslaving them in their house to work as servants.

I think a large reason that slavery is still around is apathy and ignorance. Some people have no idea that slavery exists today; they believe it was abolished during the Civil War. Those who understand what is happening simply do not care. Others choose to believe it is isn't real, that it isn't a problem. And the ones that do recognize that it is a problem merely shrug their shoulders and say, "It's awful. But there's nothing I can do."

The same reason it has existed at any other time in history - (1) there is a market for it and (2) most people are willing to turn a blind eye when they are not personally and negatively impacted by a situation.

Because the people who cry the most about slavery haven't the testicular fortitude to do anything about it.
