That is really not as hard to fix as you think. My lady wants to open all the windows as well which don't let the fans do their job. If there is no breeze you just pick a couple of windows in the same side of the house and put a couple of box fans with packing around the edges to keep the air from coming in through the fan and then back out beside the fan. Pick the rooms you want the cool to go through and open windows in the other side or end of the house to allow the air to escape. If you put any other fans in the house make sure they are moving the air in flow with the window fans. Or you just get a build up of pressure and no air movement.
On windy days you need to make sure you put the fans in the windows that the wind is blowing in on or you will just have pressure build up and no cooling.
Remember the idea is to close the shades on the east side of the house in the morning and close the shades on the west side in the after noon.
It is normally best after you get the house cooled down meaning walls and all at night to shut the doors and window during the day till the house warms up then open things up. Your house will hold the coolness for hours. My house will stay below 90 on 100 deg days doing this. You can step in and feel the dif.
Remember to cover them windows and keep that sun out side.

during hot weather houses absorb the heat ,brick houses even more than timber.sometimes , even if you have an air con it cannot cope with the extreme heat. turn on all the fans you have as well as any exhaust fans you may have over the stove and in the bathroom .it all helps to get some of the heat out of the house . remember that heat rises so open the windows at night at the top not the bottom

You might have a problem with your insulation. I doubt it though, since you say cooling the house hasn't been a problem before.
If you have an attic, try putting a fan up there to pull the hot air out and the cool air in. Or try placing a fan by a window blowing down the house: That should pull cool air in where you need it.
Also, if your wiring can support it, consider a ceiling fan.

YOU MAY NEED MORE INSULATION TO KEEP THE COOL IN AND HEAT OUT. I HAD MY ROOF REPLACED AND DURING THE PROCESS I HAD SOME OF THOSE MUSHROOM SHAPED VENTS INSTALLED THAT SPIN. THAT MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD INSIDE. IT VENTED AND COOLED THE ATTIC WHICH HELPED INSIDE. YOU COULD POSSIBLY TRY A SMALL WINDOW AC IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD CENTRAL AIR OR A SWAMP COOLER, THEY'RE EASY TO INSTALL AND ARE MADE FAIRLY LIGHT WEIGHT ANYMORE. I HAVE 2 AND IT'S ALL I HAVE NEEDED. I ALSO NOTICED WHEN I PAINTED THINGS SEEMED TO BE COOLER, AND WARMER IN WINTER. I THINK THE PAINT MAY HAVE FILLED IN A FEW CRACKS, ETC. THE HEAT HAS BEEN BAD HERE, TOO, I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL! BE CAREFUL WITH THAT!

The insulation locks the heat in so it can't escape, but there is hope a swamp cooler can cool your house up to 20 degrees. They are easy to install and maintain, you just have to change the pads once a month. Plus they don't use a lot of energy so you won't get a huge electric bill.

Get some fans that fit into the window openings for night. It will suck plenty of cool air in quick. I have 2 in my house at opposite ends adn they work great.

install a fan in your attic, it will help remove all the hot air that accumulate through out the day. it will lower your colling cost buy 50%. not just a regular fan but one that goes off when your attic reaches a certain temperature. contact your local electrician. for a quick fix try the fans in the windows that seems to help better than just a fan in your room.

Everyones answers are pretty good. I will add that a roofing contractor I know says leave the attic door open to create a breeze up there and that also helps to release the heat trapped in the attic.

Unfortunately, the objects in your house have absorbed the heat and you're just not able to get enough air out to cool things off.

Turn your fans so they blow from the inside out, blowing out the hot air.
