How do the professors most usually want the paper to be typed? Is it still double spaced? What's the norm? Does it differ like say if its a short story or and essay or something?

10 or 12 point font, double spaced is the norm at any university, regardless of whether it is an essay, or a research paper, or a short story.

However, do be sure to follow the specific citation guide recommended (or required) by the professor. Familiarize yourself with MLA, APA, and Chicago style, and learn it!

Nope. The standard is double spaced. At times, you may be asked for triple spacing -- that's when you know the prof is going to make tons of comments and wants lots of space to do it. But it doesn't matter if it's a short story, essay, or whatever. Unless otherwise specified, it's double spaced and in standard type. There are some really cute fonts out there, but you're better off in something more standard, like Helvetica.

In my classes, the largest type you can use is 12 - I prefer 11 - papers must be doublespaced with standard margins on the top, bottom and sides.....that's about an inch. The only page that the top margin can be larger is the first page. Most people seem to like them done in that manner.
