...John Stuart as a beloved television star of the people- much the way Johnny Carson was.
Keeping his skew and approach to entertainment aside (as per the "modern day" part of the question)

Stewart is actually far more political than Carson ever was.
Stewart's audience is decidedly more liberal - whereas Carson managed
to appeal to everyone.

On the other hand, Stewart asks some pretty inciteful questions for
a comedian (or a straight comentator, for that matter), whereas Carson's
questions were pretty predictable.

I find Stewart Brilliant - whereas Carson was an institution. Maybe someday
Stewart will be an institution - but I doubt he'll be as brilliant then.

Personally I think he should take over Conan's spot whenever
Conan moves to LA and takes over Jay's spot.
