Lots of people will probably recommend IPODS to you like the Ipod Shuffle or the Ipod Nano.
I used to Work at Best Buy years ago and I allways hated Ipods.
Ipods have a high return rate, break easily from jarring and shock, and scratch up very easily. Basically you have to invest money into protective sleeves and what not for an ipod.
I also do not like the IPOD's limited options of music choices and the proprietary nature of its technology.

I would recommend you go to Best Buy or Circuit City because they have a wide selection of high grade, lesser known players.

Assuming your 8 year old allready understands the concepts of downloading and transferring songs, I would recommend
the CREATIVE LABS ZEN zen V 2 gigabyte MP3 player. It has very nice looks, a color screen and holds 500 songs. At Circuit City it costs $150

I also recommend the SANDISK Sansa e260 which is a 4 Gigabyte player, holds 1000 songs and has a nice color screen that's easy on the eyes for $199.99 at Circuit City.

SAMSUNG has a couple models at Best Buy and CCity which cost less than $175, have color screens, hold lots of music and also play video.

I definately advise you NOT TO BUY IPOD, unless your son specifically wants it.

The Creative Zen Nano Plus is very cheap for an MP3 player ($55/70) and has a couple extra features. It holds either 512MB/1GB or about 125/250 songs.

You don't need to listen to any of these other answers. Don't get a brand like an ipod. That's what you get for someone who's not a kid anymore and is responsible. Get your child a brand that is not so popular and that won't be such a great loss if damaged...He's just a kid. There are a lot that are great and are not that expensive, you just have to look around and take your time. You'll find one.

iPod Shuffle might be a good one. Inexpensive so if he is not careful with it, not a big deal. Only downside is you can't see the songs but my son seems to like his. Holds 100 songs.
