However, on the ceiling above it the nails stick through with the pointy end facing down to the ground. Should we just sand and paint around these? Or is there a different way? Also.. what is the best outdoor paint to use on the poles that hold up the roof and the ceiling itself?

Well, it won't hurt anything to leave the nails. I assume you're going to roll the ceiling? As for the best paint, Sherwin Williams has a good one. Consumers Report says always buy the good stuff. Also try to buy a color that is premixed(rather than a color you found and like that the paint store can mix for you). The premixed colors last much better. On the post just paint them normally, EXCEPT be sure to seal them where they come in contact with the porch(or whatever is at the bottom) this will go a long way towards preventing rot.

If you have or have access to someone with a Dremel tool (a rotary high-speed thing that kind of looks like a small drill), one of the attachments should zip right through those nails close to the ceiling. No opinion on the other question -- Consumer Reports magazine (and available online I think) sometimes rates exterior paint brands though. Could be worth a look.

The coolest way to get rid of nails is with a dremel tool. Do you have one? The have these little rotating sand discs that you place at the base of the nail and it will saw them right off. Be sure to wear protective eyewear - you don't want anything to shoot into your eye.
