Martina leaves home at 9 A.M., bicycling at a rate of
24 mi/h. Two hours later, John leaves, driving at the rate of 48 mi/h. At what time
will John catch up with Martina?

Ok, I get the equation I think.
24x + 48 ( x - 2) = what is this one? Thank you for your help!

No no, your equation is 24x=48(x-2) -- Martina's position is the 24x, and John's position is the 48(x-2), and you want to find out when their positions are the same (that is, when 24x=48(x-2)). Anyway, it works out to x=4.

Martina = 24x
John = 48 (x - 2)

24x = 48 (x - 2)
24x = 48x - 96
96 = 24x
x=4

9am + 4 hours = 13:00 or 1 p m

Information from the statement

Martina = 24m/h

John = 48mph

Time = X - 2

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Changing the information

Martina = 24x

John = 48

Time = x -2

-- - - - - - - - - - - - -

The equation

24x = 48(x - 2)

24 x = 48x - 96

The distributive property

24x = 48x - 96
-48x -48x

Subtract -48x from both sides

-24x = 96

-24x/24 = 96/24

Divide 24 from both sides

x = 4

The andwer is x = 4

John will catch up with Martina in four (4) hours. the start time was 9AM and the time John caught up with Martina is 1pm

not real sure about the equation. I never could do math like that. But if you add it up. after 4 hours. martina has traveld 96 miles. Since John's speed is exactly double hers. then it would take him two hours to travel 96 miles. so if Martina leaves home at 9. and John leaves 2 hours later, that would make it 11. so at 1:00 they both hit 96 miles.

You were close.

24x = 48 ( x - 2)
24x = 48x - 96
24x = 96
x = 4
