Who is responsible for trimming if plant's are growing onto neighbor's property?

Question

I have some ivy that is growing over my wall and onto the roof of my neighbor's garage. Am I responsible for climbing onto their roof and trimming it back?
What about trees that have branches sticking out over their property?

you may find yourself responsible for the removal of the ivy from your neighbours roof. start by cutting back the ivy from as near to the ground as you can where it is climbing up onto the roof. then you will need to get some poison from the garden center to spray onto the ivy,be careful you do not spray the neighbours other plants or you may have to replace them. i would then spray the ivy on my side of the fence to prevent it from repeating it's climbing back up onto the neighbours' roof.for the trees /branches which overhang your side of the fence , check with your local council but here in oz it is normal to cut them off and toss them over the fence from where they came from .

If you have plants projecting onto a neighbor's property, they have the right to trim that part themselves at any time. I don't think that means that you have to do it. Don't trespass, of course. But it's strictly up to them. If there is a large tree that if the neighbor trims his or her side would present a danger to your side, as the tree would be unbalanced and may then fall on your side and maybe your house, then it's a neighborhood association issue and possibly a Department of Public Safety issue. Call around.

they have the right to trim any part of the plant that makes it onto their property. if they have a problem with how far the ivy has grown onto their property you have a responsibility to trim your plant from your property and pull as much of the clippings as you can onto your property. their are liability issues if you get on their roof so they will likely not want you to get on there.

Whoever owns the tree or plant is responsible for keeping it away from the surrounding property. I think you have some ivy to trim.

They are your plants and I think is your responsibility to trim them before touch your neighbor property. But if the plants are already touching or invading in his property I think he can cut them. If you neighbor come to talk to you about the plants you need to do something as an owner is your responsibility.

And I think he can make a report at the city hall. So to prevent conflicts... fix the problem

It is your responsibility. Just let your neighbors know that you will be doing some trimming and may need to get onto their property.

i think legally you are resoonsible for anything that is on your property. if a tree grows over your neighbors property, and they dont want it there, they will have to file witht he city to be able to remove.. (i think) but as for the ivy..... no you are not responsible. if you dont mind it being cut, then they can cut it out. what happens if you seed your lawn with high-grade bluegrass, and it grows into your neighbors yard?

You should try trimming what you can without climbing on their stuff. Ask how they want to approach issue. Offer to do work, but accept if they don't want you climbing. It's you plant, you're responsible.

As for trees, same thing goes.

You should, as it is youre ivy. However, they have every right to trim it, as it is growing over their property.

If any trees, plants, etc are on their side of the property line then they're responsible to take care of it.
