i presume you mean mademoiselle Chanel herself and monsieur Dior? as opposed to lagerfeld's and galliano's version?
i think mademoiselle understood women much better and her style is timeless. when i am at her boutiques, i marvel at all her signatures and trademarks, the 2 tone shoes, the quilted bags with the chains, the camellia, the suits and dresses with the interlocking 'c' gold buttons, the perfumes...how fresh and modern it looks season after season, decade after decade. she had a timeless style and had a universality and modernity that transcended time and cultures.
as for monsieur dior, much as i love his style, he had a very short career, about 10 years before he died. he did not evolve with the times as mademoiselle chanel did, who died in 1971, well over 80. she outlived all her rivals, of which Dior was one of them. she hated him and said he did not dress women, but 'upholstered' them. when you think of dior, there aren't really any signatures or trademarks that spring to mind, unlike chanel.
at least lagerfeld is doing a great job at chanel, and keeping her legacy alive. unlike galliano at dior. it is now vulgarity personified!
for me, the greatest is Mr Cristobal Balenciaga.

Coco Chanel. Hands down! Chanel stands for the classic sophisticated look with a little style. You can't go wrong with Chanel. Look at the Chanel No.5 commercial with Nicole Kidman. Classic, elegant. Dior's cool, but Chanel is No.1

I say, for more mature, middle aged women, Coco Chanel. But then, for teens, Christian Dior is more hip and fun.
