This depends on the reasons of the individual.
Usually however, it's the fact that they realize it's a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Problems come and go, and suicide simply eliminates all possible chances of you moving on and fixing previous problems.
By living, people do experience challenges, but they can also have fun. And suicide is just a strict decision...too strict, and too negative. Just my thoughts.
How about you?

Speaking as someone who has suffered Major Depression all my life the things that keep me from committing suicide are as follows:
1. It is against the will of GOD.
2. My Father killed himself, and I will never get over that betrayal.
3. My family, especially my children, because I don't want them to go through the years of "what-if's" and "would have, could have, should have's" that people dwell on after a loved commits suicide.
4. It IS the coward's way out (sorry, Daddy!)
Life is precious LIVE IT!!!!!

Desire to live is a basic instinct. Only when a person evolves consciously , he understands the true nature of life, and in the process, understands that even death is merely an absence of life ! Till this happens, death keeps approaching us in various forms. Logical mind tells us that physically mutilating our physical body is the only method called 'suicide' , where as the truth is, all forms of death except 'consciously' (leaving the body, or dropping the body), at will , all other forms are mild forms(yet unrecognised as) of suicide !

For me, it is taking the craven way out. I believe that things that happen to us are to shape us to evolve the best we can on the planet. Some of those lessons come with very painful emotions and situations. It just depends whether you want to play the role of the '''victim' or 'victor'. Me, personally, I choose the latter

You look on the positive side of life. Life is short, why end it so early? It is also if you are a Christian you don't end your life too short or extend it too long. It's becuase of many reasons like the ones you listed above.

God has planted a survival instinct in each person. It is want keeps us wanting to take that next breath. Even if we say that we want to die, we will struggle to take that next breath if something interferes with out breathing.
Survival is planted deep in our consciousness.

well, to tell you the truth, i think most of us have thought about suicide at least once or twice in our lives. but there's that "something" that keeps us away from it. for me, mostly it's the knowledge of the fact that things will get better. and they always do.

I personally think it's because al of us have a specific thing we wnt to happen in the world. We don't want to leave this world until our work is done.
