Gay? Perhaps not, but a lesbian ... yep ... I'm all for it!

I'm still not sure what I think about that. I will have to read it to tell you. I 'm totally for the concept of a Gay superhero, although it's certianly not the first. Marvel's 'The Young Averngers' has a gay member (the young Hulk). The problem is that the young hulk wears (or did wear, not sure if he still does)fishnet stockings. Gay doesn't automatically equal transvestite, and all that Marvel is doing by adding this petty little detail is perpetuating a usually incorrect stereotype. My concern is that DC will make the same mistake of felling the need to coat Batgirl's life with inaccurate stereotypes. If they can avoid that, then they've done something good. Not only to help people be aware of the relative normalicy of the gay population but for the diversification of the comic book world.

I'm split: on one end, I'm sure D.C. did it as a marketing ploy (same reason any comic book company does anything) and not because they want to bring about awareness or anything so lofty.

On the other, I couldn't care less. What's important is: a) is this Batgirl capable of actually fighting crime in Gotham effectively, and b) will she last long enough to make an impact on the D.C. universe, or simply be killed off in the next 'event'. The latter depends on which writers/artists are assigned to the character, and that will tell you how seriously the company takes the new Batgirl.

Interesting! I am a huge Batman fan! I love to read comics! I like Batgirl! I am a straight guy, but that does not mean I am against gays! I think it was a brave descision!

It's not BatGIRL, it's BatWOMAN, and I think it's great they are addressing homosexuality in the comics. I can't wait for the day when being gay isn't any worse than being a redhead.

Why not? Comic books need to keep up with current trends or people lose interest. I am a die hard collector of comics and I'm fine with it. I think she's really hot. Sexual orientation should have nothing to do with it. As long as she has the personality, gadgets, costume and generally follows the character line who cares?

hey ziz obviously you don't know what you're talking about. Ever heard of Comic-Con? or maybe went by your local comic book store and asked how was business?

I haven't read it yet so I can't honestly say I'm all riled up about it. If comic books are going to keep with the times though it kind of surprises me it hasn't happened until now.

A pitiful and sexist attempt on the part of the (mostly male) leadership of National Comics to profit on the political climate by introducing a lesbian figure who will primarily appeal to juvenile males. Like themselves.
