I think they are called Tiger Beetles??? In northern AZ, they are active in the earlier part of the year, and, in the southern areas they are more active in summer, and later. There also is a Cyprus Bark Beetle (But, are found mostly around trees) Palmetto beetles, can occasionally, be found around palm trees, but, generally are found more in Florida. They are a large black weevil, with red stripes.

I live in Arizona also. If you are talking about what I think you are, those big bugs are called palmetto beetles. The look really scary, but they are harmless. They sure are ugly, huh?

If it sticks it's tush up in he air, sniff it. if it stinks, it's a stink beetle!
