There are currently 50 states in the United States. There are 48 contiguous (connected) states and 2 more (Alaska and Hawaii)

An additional star would make it 51 (not 43 [sorry]).

I don't think that the US would be including ANY additional states in the next 20 years. (We tend to be snooty like that.)

We currently have the 50 states and 7 U.S. Territories.

============

The 7 U.S. Territories are:

Territory is a general term for a region under the general authority of the United States, but with its own local laws. The US Congress annexed the first territory, the Northwest Territory, in 1787. All but 19 states were once territories. There are currently numerous US possessions:

PUERTO RICO
Commonwealth (Residents Are US Citizens, but may not vote in Presidential elections and have no voting representation in Congress; an elected non-voting delegate may debate in Congress; island government controls all matters not addressed in the US Constitution)
Capital: San Juan (Puerto Rico is the Easternmost island of the Greater Antilles)
Population 3,916,632 (July 2005 est.)
Puerto Ricans decided in a plebiscite in 1993 not to be incorporated as a state

GUAM
Unincorporated Territory (Residents Are US Citizens, but may not vote in Presidential elections and have no voting representation in Congress; an elected non-voting delegate may debate in Congress)
Capital Agana (Guam is geographically part of the Mariana Islands)
Population 168,564 (July 2005 est.)

US VIRGIN ISLANDS
Unincorporated Territory (Residents Are US Citizens, but may not vote in Presidential elections and have no voting representation in Congress; an elected non-voting delegate may debate in Congress)
Capital: Charlotte Amalie (on St. Thomas)
Population 108,708 (July 2005 est.)

AMERICAN SAMOA
Unorganized and Unincorporated Territory
Capital: Pago Pago
Population 7,881 (July 2005 est.)

NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS
Commonwealth Since 1986
Capital: Saipan
Population 80,362 (July 2005 est.)

MIDWAY ISLAND
Unorganized and Unincorporated US Territory
No indigenous inhabitants; approximately 40 people make up the staff of US Fish and Wildlife Service and their services contractor living at the atoll
US military only

THE MARSHALL ISLANDS
Population 59,071 (July 2005 est.)

Currently 50 stars for 50 states...Puerto Rico will probably be the next state, within 20 years.

The stars on the flags do not represent countries.

Wierd question because it is based on false information. The stars represent states not countries. So no star will be added for any country.

Liladee --- no offense.. but yet you would be pissed? huh? (BTW learn how to spell Puerto Rico! P U E R T O (space) R I C O!!

Anyways, Puerto Rico would probably become the 51st state. It has been talked about before. I believe Puerto Ricans have voted for it not to become one. I think they should... and probably will soon!

Um, if one star were added, it would total 51. I would say Puerto Rico, they have earned it. Eagle

i'd possibly opt for to get a tattoo of the endless signal with the quote "And in that second, I swear we were endless" from a e book I study reported as The Perks of Being A Wallflower. i'd possibly positioned it someplace round my rib or hip section.
