The drums were probably the oldest instrument. Clappers and flutes were also among some of the earliest instruments. All three of these date back to the ice age. Even the earliest drums were probably just banging a stick on a rock. Flutes were made of animal bones. Early clappers were just two sticks being beaten together.

I've seen several news items that show extremely old primitive flutes, made out of bone. I mean like early stone age stuff. But the easiest musical instrument to make should be the first one, and that would be something to drum on, and that would be a hollow log. The thing is, we would not know that it was used as a drum even if it survived.

A stick against a rock. Funny how "new" music is very similar to the old ... rap isn't much different than high tech stick against a rock. Most of the musical instruments we know today were invented in the 18th and 19th centuries. 4 part harmony didn't exist until 3 or 4 hundred years ago or so.

Probably some kind of animal skin stretched over a hollowed out log and banged on by a stick...a drum basically!
