Dell, HP and IBM are good and about the same prices. Sony is nice, but pricy. Toshiba is often problem prone. Apple is ...well, Apple is just Apple. Unless you're more worried about your image, get a mainstream laptop, not a glorified Etch-a-Sketch.
There are others in that price range that could save some bucks over the above brands (Acer, E-machines, etc), but I wouldn't recommend them. This is an area where spending $$$ on quality is worth it.

If you want windows - forget the apple, even though the new ones have Intels inside now.....
HP (90% of the time most bang for the buck), Toshiba (well built and solid, a tad expensive) or Dell (if you are not an impulse buyer and can wait... you can get a good deal on one)
Sony is too expensive for what you get and they always need to have something 'non' standard
IBMs are just weird in my opinion
While I would consider locally built desktops, I'd stay away from no name notebooks - a well designed notebook takes deep pockets to develop... you can't just slap a good one together from standard parts.

You should pick a computer based on the use or uses. Are you a student? Will you be doing papers, e-mails or graphics/pics more? Playing/recording media or DVDs? Any of the brands you've picked are good but some are better than others for certain uses. Give us more to work with, plz.

Acer Notebooks are excellent and 6 month old models seem to be coming down in price almost every week. My local shop has also recommended a Taiwanese brand called Asus but haven't tried them myself.

There is also Compaq. But the main thing is what do you want to use it for? There are different ones out there with different specifications depending on what you want to use it for..ie, school work, internet, movies, games, etc.
