I have three kids, and took two years off for each from working. How do I word this correctly on my resume or job application to make it sound professional?

If an application requires you to explain unemployment, state that you took the time to focus on personal ambitions. When asked during the interview, explain that you felt it the best investment of your time and resources to raise your children and manage your home and list the experience you gained from it. There is no need to explain it on a resume.

You are not unique as many have gone through the same.

It is important to state honestly the gap. Don't shy away from it. Use it as a leverage to show your strength and character. Those years show them as a part of your character and strength building at Home University- taking personal responsibility and accountability for raising a precious family. Leadership, stress management, scheduling, multi tasking, crisis management etc are some of the traits that you have learnt ( and hopefully mastered)and hence makes you a better candiadate!

DON'T TALK ABOUT IT. Leave those blank time periods unexplained, and discuss them in the interview if they ask you. Think about what skills you learned from being a mom that could transfer to the workplace.

Mention that "(you) took off from employment obligations to tend to FAMILY obligations during that time."
Stress that "due to this (family) experience, you have learned how to balance your obligations so you can devote your undivided attention to each." This presents you as a WELL-ROUNDED employee; a quality that many employers seek.

You just did. Simply state you chose to remain home and raise children for a period of time.
