I live in Texas like another person wrote. I had a 2002 F-150 which I had the 2 front windows tinted to the legal max of 35%. The other windows were tinted from the factory. I had no problems but when I had it inspected it failed because the shop that tinted them for me put on the wrong tint. I never did get pulled over though. I had to strip the tint off and have it retinted.

I know of one several people who have been pulled over. In Canada, they give you a ticket that says "have a certified garage say the problem is fixed" (same as dead headlights or signal lights, etc.) and maybe pay the fine if its wrong, depending on how obnoxious the cops are.
I also heard one fellow say the local cops (small town, Canadian RCMP) pulled him over because he was mouthy the night before about a speeding ticket. The cop reaches in, waves his hand on the other side of the back door window, and said "this window is too tinted" and threatened to write him a ticket. He replied "What are you talking about? That's the original factory tint!".
Of course, dealers can't sell a car that isn't cerfied to road standards, so the cop knew he would have lost in court, didn't write the ticket. But, it proves some love to throw their weight around if they've had too many donuts. Keep the installer receipt and certification (or a copy) handy in the glovebox.
In Canada, there are limits to what can be tinted too. IIRC, 70% for rear side windows, 50% for rear window and front doors, nothing for windshield?

I have limo tint on the back 3 windows and that is legal in jersey but I also have my front windows tinted to 50% and have gotten pulled over and the cop pretty much told me I had to remove them. They are still there.

In Texas Cops will not stop you but your car will not pass the state inspection till you remove the tint. My car has 35% on and when I go out of state I have been stopped and the cop tested my tint. I failed for the that state but he couldn't do anything about it since it was legal in the area I live.

in texas you can have it as dark as 20 percent. which is only 20 of sunlight coming through. limo is illegal here for passenger car. except for limosines ofcourse. but about 80% of people here have tints in the front and rear. Alot of SUV's come with factory tint in the rear windows. The only people that will hassle you are state trooper, and that's only if they have pulled you over for another reason, they wont pull you over just because of tint. In texas, when the sun shines... it really shines, so it's nice to have tint to block UV rays. I use 3M tints,.

No I am not over the limit.
50% tinting will give the police a reason to stop you.
If stopped for a different reason, the heavy tint, could get you an additional ticket

In my area they got some grandma cars (look just like cop cars) that never get hassled as they blend in with the Under cover cars.. others it depends more on suspicious activity but also you can't pass inspection without a doctors excuse if over 50% on the front.
