Women today are training men to be assholes. Yes, assholes. This type of guy is the only type that girls these days are attracted to. All those other "gentlemen" never get nearly as many girls as assholes, if any. These gentlemen then get frustrated at this and eventually turn themselves into assholes, in order to be attractive to girls, and therefore get laid.
Ask yourself this question: What do you find more attractive: a nice guy (aka gentleman), or a cocky-funny jock?
You are correct, it is the woman's fault: NICE GUYS FINISH LAST. I am living proof.
PS yes some - but very few - girls do like nice guys, but only those who have had recent emotional stress (breakups) and need something to make them feel better.

I happened to have asked a question like this only a few days ago. I am a southern woman, and those of us in this part of the USA still believe in chivalry or in men being a gentleman as you put it. I am a full functioning woman and I believe that if a man cannot get me things I want that I can get them myself. So I have PARTLY subscribed to the new era of women. However, as a southern woman, I still expect a man to buy me a drink, light my cigarettes and hold out my chair for me. At least while he is getting to know me or courting me, as we still occassionally say around here. I truly appreciate the men who still have the decency and proper upbringing to realize that respecting a woman is the best way to woo a woman. Once we are a couple established, I have no problem whatsoever with sharing the costs of things. We would now be a unit, and we would share what we have to make each other happy. But I do agree that most women have made men want to ignore the old rules and let them handle themselves..... so I guess I would say that it is partly our fault, but it is also partly the men's fault for not being raised correctly....

why does the female have to inspire the male to act like a gentleman? why are females held up as the perfect half of the species? why can't respect for a fellow human be something one does rather than one is trained to do?
Holding open doors and giving up a seat to someone shouldn't be gender specific. I'm a feminist but I'm also a realist. This has transcended the gender thing completey...If people would just treat each other with the same respect they want in return, we'd not even have to worry about this stuff.

Too many women today EXPECT guys to do everything for them.... pay for dinners, open doors, etc. But men also expect women to put out. It's become a vicious "war" between the two sexes and is neverending. I think that both men and women were at one time or another respectful and caring to each other, but when one hurts the other, then crude behavior erupts. Feminism is a revolution for women brings out rude behavior.
But regardless, believe me, chivalry is NOT dead. I know plenty of guys, including me, that open doors for women and treat women with respect, and not expect to get something in return. I miss those parts of the Medieval times... where knights and chivalry reigned.

I think ssavage23's response really hit the proverbial nail on the head for me. I grew up in the urban north, moved to the rural south, back up to the urban north, and now in the rural south again. In the south, there is more pressure on a man to give up his seat on a bus to a woman who's standing, but up north my pregnant wife could rarely find a seat. If someone offered her their seat, it was usually a woman who offered.
I think there are a lot of guys in the urban north who are afraid to open a door because they might be seen as sexist. It's not that they don't want to be polite though.
Another answer might be that as this upcoming generation becomes more selfish people don't hold doors open for people at all-no matter what. Frequently I've watched several people go through a door without holding the door for someone with both arms full of stuff--gender irrespective.

We all have the choice to be who we are. As the world progresses, women have been able to climb from beneath the weight of oppression, and start making their own choices...ie, who they are, and the type of person they want to be.
Women these days, no longer feel the need to fit into the role created by our mothers and grandmothers. I choose to be me.
You can choose to see the negative sides of society, or
you can choose to to see the bright side.
I dont think that men see women the same way they see other men. Hopefully, in the workplace, it is that way, however, in a social setting, men commonly act chivalrous towards the women. I see, often enough, a man sitting at the bar, will offer his seat to a woman, he holds the door, he lights her cigarette.
Its best to Observe people in different settings to see the full picture.

I never heard I wasn't supposed to show a lady courtesy with a door, a seat, a helping hand, or what-have-you. I like doing that, I do it all the time, and I usually get a smile or a thank-you from them, so apparently they don't mind. I'm glad I haven't run into too many of the kind of women you're talking about.

I am going to explain this to you as though you are a six year old.
Disobedience was the first sin. God told Adam not to eat of the tree of 'Knowledge' and the tree of 'Life.' Being the man of God, thast he was. Satan decided to confront his wife. Eventfully she gave in and ate of the tree, then gave some to Adam.
The disobedience was on Adam, not Eve!
Now God arrives and asks, "What have you done?" The first thing comes out of Adams mouth was, "... it was that woman you gave me!"
Adam allowed himself to walk outside the spirit of God.
Satan has perverted the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman. He has perverted the creation of the family. Especially, perverted concept a woman don't need a man, and a man don't need a woman.
Even sex outside of marriage cheapens what you have planned to give to your one true love, yet how many times did he or you had to fine each other. A woman cannot be a man and vise versa.
Watch an Katherine Hepburn or Dorothy Dandridge movie, they are good examples

I agree that there are still gentlemen out there but they are a dying breed because women want to be "treated equal." There are always going to be somethings men have over women just like there is somethings women have over men. So yes it is women's fault because they don't think they should be respected. Women well never be completely equal to men because women and men are different.(its people like John H that make this society continue to degrade women(and men))
