He has had stress tests and all was well. He is diabetic, high blood pressure and now he can not get air while laying flat.

If he learns to control his breathing through yoga, that would be best maybe. or have a DR. look at him.

Sounds like a blockage of some kind in the airway. I have a large and slightly detached soft palette which does cause some airway blockage when laying down.Also it could be allergies to airborne contaminates. Does he stop breathing while sleeping ? Sleep Apnea...

Time to see an ENT Doctor.....

Check up a Yoga book that contains breathing exercises. I was a former ashmatic & got well after practising different types of Yogic breathing.
