I use Spybot S&D (although I would like to know where the bots are that its scans and if I need any of them), AVG Antivirius, Windows Defender, and The "Scotty is on Patrol" thing. I use Mozzila Firefox instead of IE and I've cleaned and defragmented my hardrive and disabled programs at startup but its still nothing like it used to be. People tell me what i need is more RAM but if it worked fine when the computer was new a couple years ago, whats changed so that the amount of RAM isn't sufficent now? It doesnt make sense that i need more RAM unless something has happen to the amount I have originally. Although RAM seems like the simplest, if not the only optionat this point I would appreicate it greatly if anyone could come up with some further ideas, especailly ones that aren't too expensive.

try the free ccleaner(ccleaner.com). it gets rid of all the accumulated junk that clogs your computer. run both the crap cleaner and the registry cleaner.

You neglect to mention anything else about the computer... like the CPU speed, and amount of RAM youi DO have...

Simply put, you can never have too much RAM...

That said, for XP: the minimum for any performance at all is 512Mb, with 1Gb recommended...

If you happen to have "shared video" RAM, the video will "steal" from system RAM, making even less available.

As time progresses, your System Registry will expand, consuming more and more RAM of the system as it goes along. Keep these thoughts in mind when deciding what to do.

I like your choice of tools that you posted (AVG, Spybot, and Win Def) ... Not sure about the "scotty" thing, though.

Sounds like you are doing everything right, so short of knowing the missing info I listed here, little else to do!

All doors are open presently & each and every tom dick & harry is loose to have a go, opt for your call & kick Indian cricket for loose, they're responsible for this mess. no longer responsible until eventually eventually shown so yet each and every person is searching for more effective sensation & pretty some those who're right here at YA only for this purpose, so won't be able to assume any sympathy. seem on the reply SBS has given & you'll keep in mind that a balanced man or woman has balanced perspectives & others with imbalanced perspectives can count number themselves for this reason & there are quite some them round. Kicking someone already on the floor is easy yet hardly all and sundry extends a helping hand & they stand out in tens of millions..

The experts say that you should reinstall your operating system once every six months and reformat your hard drive but if you don't have the right tools to do these things you should try taking your computer to a local Best Buy where the Geek Squad can do these things for a price.

There are several things you can do to at least help your sluggish computer. Defragment the hard drive(s) on a weekly basis. Run CCleaner (google for more info) often, also. Uninstall programs/games that you don't use often enough to have on your computer. Also schedule regular scans on your computer to inure that the lag isn't due to trojans or malware.
Basically just regular maintenance.

As computers become essential to our everyday lives, it is equally important to ensure that they perform at optimum efficiency. A malfunctioning computer at home can prevent a student from gaining valuable research material, a business person from completing their work, or a ‘web surfer’ just trying to enjoy the Internet.

If you’re in need of computer assistance, don’t waste any more time rummaging through manuals or waiting on hold for someone whose focus is to get you off the phone quickly. Call in the professionals from Juvio!

Big simple thing many people overlook... Get a can of air and clean out the fans and blow all the dust out of the inside.

empty browser cookies and cache

periodic reformats are a good thing

RAM can and does degrade over time, and especially is effected if you have added a lot more probrams to your system since it was new.

Reformat is great. Just remember to back up all your important files on DVD-R's or CD-R's If reformatting isnt an option for some reason. Try using defragmenter. It will organize your hard drive and make write times faster.

you may have a lot of clutter, may try a software program like system mechanic 6, allows for optimization specs, cleans, and defrags system memory allowing to view available memory usage, also try unloading all cookies, webunused folders , dump all unnecessary items to disc. then defrag after cleaning out the items , good luck you"ll figure it out more on storage slower the sys.
