Good question. There's no correct answer. I would suppose that in some instances we may step in because of our own agenda being threatened. Then again, if you look at all the wars we've fought in the 20th century....we're asked for help. WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, and the Gulf War in the 90's; we were asked to help...and we did. In a larger sense, perhaps if we didn't step in and just sat on our butts and did nothing, some fool idiot would find a way to push that button and bye bye earth. So maybe our being there to step in may not seem right, but it sure does prevent a lot of other stuff.

First of all it takes a lot of common sense to be a mediator, for example take the Palestine's and the Israelis they believe two wrongs make a right, now when a mediator comes in to help, that person must understand the real meaning of what is right and what is wrong simply put a good understanding of common sense, for the most part we in the western part of the world are taught right from wrong and good or bad, in the Middle East they are taught one thing at a very young age become a martyr make your family proud go blow your self up so the people will look up to us.Now in all the news that I have seen over the years that comes out of the Middle East I never seen one ounce of common sense used over there just a bunch of fanatics burning flags and yelling kill kill kill and in my opinion that is why the US is always called on.

Without us, the world would blow themselves to smithereens. Reminds me of when President Woodrow Wilson tried to mediate among the warring nations during WWI.....that never worked so we went in around 1917-1918 to save the wussy French and everyone from the Germans.

And you know how "effective" the Versailles treaty was.

because they think they are right and perfect in every way and if people would just ALL be like Americans all the world's troubles would disappear without a trace.

That's why America's the greatest country- they're so perfect! All non-Americans should spend the rest of their lives trying to be as perfect and the world would all be perfect and happy together with no wars, no drugs, no suffering, no free choice, no pre-marital sex, no problems! Just don't step out of line because you're pretty expendable.....

It isn't and it doesn't. Problems in which the US mediates are problems very specific to US interests. Things it doesn't give diddly squat about, such as conditions in South America, it simply ignores.

if you call bombing the hell out of countries, assasinating foreign leaders, and robbing other countries of their natural resources "mediating", then the U.S is always doing it because they love it. If you want to talk about the recent talks between Lebanon and Isreal, then it is because the US leaders believe themselves to be Christians, and therefore linked to the survival of the Isreal state.

With great power and wealth comes great responsibility. Our nation is blessed because the founding fathers threw off the shackles of colonialism. We are a free nation because of the thousands of men and women who fought to keep us free. With God's many blessings, we are expected to share with others ... not just material goods and money, but to assist in bringing freedom to all around the globe.

Because when the U.S. doesn't help, the rest of world screams at us to help them.

When we do help, we are called infidels (among other things) and yelled at to get out of where ever it is we were helping.

That and the fact that we get ourselves into situations that cannot end peacefully.

I totally agree. We dish out billions all around the globe while we have starving people in our own country and a horrendous health care system. Until we fix our own country we need to close the books.
