Well obtaining a liquor license from the city it's in itself can be a problem. So can being sure that the land is zoned for not just retail but for liquor as well. You need to have a lot of sales since Liquor is an expirable so you need a good location. There's a lot of things to consider and just a simple business plan might not cover everything. I'd guess in a good location you'd need to lease it if you're just starting out.
Since liquor stores are often robbed insurance and personal risk is going to be high too. As would the cost of hiring any employees since it is a known risk.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.
I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.
Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
* Start and Run a Profitable Retail Business by Jim Dion, Ted Topping
* Retail Business Kit for Dummies by Rick Segel
* Specialty Shop Retailing: How to Run Your Own Store Revised by Carol L. Schroeder
* So You Want To Own The Store: Secrets to Running a Successful Retail Operation by Mort Brown
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

RE:
I want to own a liquor store. I want to know what would be involved in starting a business like that.?
I always felt that a liquor store would be good since you don't have to work too hard at it. None of the product goes bad like it would in Subway etc. This is me brain-storming. I need someone's advice on how to get started. How much money does the inventory cost? Do you lease the...

not as easy as it seems- have you considered working in a liquor store first to get a sense of how operations work?
when i wanted to start a business i went onto the small business administration website and found that small business failure rates were pretty high (i don't remember for liquour stores- you can go look up but restaurants were like 50% in the first 3 years). the number one highest survival rate was for funeral homes (i didn't want to do that either). number 2 if u can believe it was a dry cleaner. i worked at a dry cleaner and realized it wasn't for me. maybe job for a few months at a liquor store might help u decide how serious you are.

Many states limit the number of liquor stores that an area may have based on population so it can be next to impossible to open one from scratch. Without out a couple of hundred thousand dollars in cash, it is not going to be easy.

depends on where you are... you gotta worry about liquor license, , location and zoning, liquor tax, liquor laws, inventory, alcoholics and kids breaking into your store... being robbed... business license... being fined out the butt because someone had a fake i.d. or was too drunk to purchase... i could go on and on and on ... bottom line is that its not as easy of a business as you think ... and just to get the license alone involves a lot of red tape but good luck anyway

Alot of money to get the liquor license. The only allow so many in some states, so they can be hard to come by and at a pretty penny, But if you're lucky to get one.......a loan to get your merchandise and your building, then there's advertising, employees, licensing, taxes...ect.

not as easy as you might expect. I know that in the state of Texas they do not issue any new licenses so you have to buyout existing liscenses not in use. Can get real expensive real quick.
I have not purchased directly from a liquor store in years.
