Yeah, I'd go with Shakespeare or Poe or Mark Twain. Most people know at least Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe, and if they don't know Mark Twain, they've been deprived. He's so funny.

Shakespeare. Because EVERYONE knows who he is, while a lot of people will ask you "Who's J.K. Rowling? Oh, yeah, she's the Harry Potter chick." Whereas you never have to explain Shakespeare, even stupid people know him.
