If you can splurge, use Chanel make-up. SOOOOOO NICE.

I'm assuming you're young and have normal or oily skin and thus my experience is relevant. I'm also assuming you mean foundation/powder. Drug store shadow, blush and mascara are fine. Ask an old lady about foundation if you have dry skin! For oily, I've used em all and Bare Minerals foundation is the best. It lasts all day, resists water and sweating, and creates a glow that people will notice. It does not contain anything artificial, and helps skin stay clear. Check bareminerals.com to learn about it. If it is too expensive ($50-60 for a 3-month starter kit then ~$15/month to maintain), I would grab a more experienced friend and go to an Ulta Store if possible, or Sephora, or if none is around you then go to a department store and play with the samples or get a beauty consultant to fix you up.
If you want to go for it, I really like Clinique powder foundation. Get an oil free variety. (It's $22 or so, so wait until there's a bonus gift special at the department store). Check clinique.com and join club clinique to get emailed when it's bonus time. http://www.clinique.com/templates/door/events_bonus.tmpl?AD_ID=8838
Covergirl smells like Noxema, fyi. Maybelline is better, followed by Revlon, but Neutrogena is probably the most well-liked drug store brand in my experience. Cheaper stuff tends to work fine at first but goes bad sooner, usually before empty even w/daily use.

I have combination skin and I have always had a problem with my makeup clumping and fading halfway through the day. I also developed acne in my tweenties that got really bad. Nothing worked well for me... MaryKaye, Clininque, Avon, Merle Norman, CoverGirl, Rimmel, Revlon.....I've tried it all. Products for acne never worked either...ProActive, Noxema, Oil of Olay, Clearisil....Nothing really helped. Until this year when a friend steared me to Beauticontrol. The "All Clear" acne skin care line is the best. (my face hasn't looked this good since I was 12) The "Wet/Dry" foundation with the "Extra Help" concealer is awesome. You don't need powder with the Wet/Dry. It goes on easily and quickly. It has a matte finish and you can use it to touch up later if you do get a little shiney and it won't look caked on. You can't feel it on you face so it's comfortable. Really outstanding stuff.

I love this stuff so much I became a consultant.
Good luck!
PS The compact lasts about four to five months.

MAC cosmetics are great. Very bold colors and long lasting.
I also love Lancome, Clinique, and Dior.
Chanel is also great.
Department cosmetics brands the best.
So don't waste your money on drugstore brands because it's all about the quality... which is what they lack.
Go to sephora.com. It has MANY different cosmetics brands that you can check out before you buy them instore. Or you could just order online.
It's an awesome site for makeup.
Hope I helped a bit. :]

Depending on how much you can spend...
For eye shadows and foundation I use Chanel, they are the greatest and last a while.
For lip gloss I use Mac Lip Glass and Lancome gloss tubes... the taste great too
Eye pencil I also use Chanel, they stay on all day...
Eye make up remover, I use Estee lauder 'cause it's very gentle, lancome is more oily and lotion like...
I use Bobi Brown shimmer blush, it gives you a tanned look but they have it in pinks as well.
I have been using these for about 7 years now.

ive found that as far as foundation, covergirl only looks good for about an hour- then it settles into all of your pores and lines. go with maybelline dream matte mousse, or MAC studio Fix powder with a good liquid foundation. BUY EXPENSIVE EYESHADOW-- if you do not, then after the first few uses, you will find lumps inside, witch ruin the texture and consisntancy and the eyeshadow you fell in love with will begin to crap out on you. USE A BRUSH-- powder-puff your lid before you do or it will be blotchey, then use a brush for shadow application.

ARBONNE!! Their new mineral foundation is awesome. It's very light and last's all day. I was using Bare Minerals and loved it too. Arbonne's price is better for the size and it also comes with a brush everytime you reorder.
They use only the purest ingriedients available. Everybody's different so you may have to try several until you find one that you feel is awesome. GOOD LUCK!!

My favorite brands: Lancome, Flirt and Maybelline. I like MAC too. If you are young, MAC is a very moderately priced and hip makeup line. You can sleep in MAC and wake up looking like you just put it on.

this all depends on how much you are willing to spend! i wear MAC and benifit. but that is because i love dramatic make up. the rest of my family used bare essentials they are also good but for the more natural look. on the cheaper side you can use cover girl. this also depends on how much you wear. if you wear a lot then its actually better on your face to use a variety of make up so that your face doesnt brake out. i have been helping girls that only wear one kind of product and its bad for your skin. try to stay away from any liquids because when you sweat and rub your pores open and are then clogged from the foundation. try to stick with powders. MAC and Benifit have all of that. also BAre essentials is ONLY powders!!! so that works!
hope i helped!!!

I love Bare Essentials. All natural and you feel like you wearing no makeup at all. I put aloette brightening serum under it first and ever since I started doing that I get comments on how well my makeup looks everyday.
