does anyone else think that there has been a serious decline in the quality of music today?
i am so sick of these whiny, talentless, toddlers who have nothing to say so they "write" these ridiculous songs and flood the airwaves with the music equivalent of feces (fallout boy, my chemical romance, etc.) does anyone think that today's youth has been robbed of good music? my personal opnion is that my generation (i'm 22) witnessed the last wave of good music in the 90s with bands such as Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction, and others. all this crap now is just noise. I keep up with all of it (or with what i can stand), and i just haven't been even halfway impressed with anything in the last 6 years.

anyone agree?

andre - good call on the technology angle. i'm not saying that there hasn't been ANYTHING good in the recent past, just very little. it's just all filler and it's sad, so sad. especially when these little 13 year old brats try to act all tough and defend their poor taste in music and up my inbox with colorful metaphors and name-calling just because i thin fallout boy and HiM are pathetic excuses for music.

ahhh....ignorance is bliss i guess. sometimes i feel much older than my 22 years.

anyway, thanks for your response! very insightful.

You left Panic! At the disco out of your examples of faeces. I'm pretty sure they are all the same band. It gets really hard to listen to the radio when you have to avoid all the s**t that record companies are paying to be on high rotation. While I appreciate that everyone has different tastes, I get really sick of a market that is flooded with bad rap and whiny boys in eye makeup. Something that returns my faith in music is going to see up and coming bands. Like 5 bands for 5 bucks type things. They often have more talent than the people making the top 40 but not the money. And it's cool to have a secret band that you love that you can listen to without it being thrashed to death by others. The music is out there, you just won't find it on MTV or mainstream radio. The White Stripes is the only new band from the past few years that I have truly liked.

To defend some of the music of today, I have to say that, Yes most of the popular music today sucks and is just a bunch of screaming guitars with someone singing over them. But there are many bands that actually have real musicians that know how to play and how to write music, not just a bunch of cord changes, they are just really hard to find and not many people, at least of who i've asked, know of them. The good things I see coming out of this new period of music are that new technology exists that helps bands gain new levels of sounds and effects, now knowing how to effictively use them is another story, also I hear new soundscapes being created by some bands that are not just up-beat chord slamming, some bands actually know how to create a sound that tells a story, along with the lyrics of course. I think that there is still hope for music, just not too much on the now popular ridiculousness of some of the songs out there today.

There has definitely been a decline. There seems to be a melting pot of music today, where there's really hard to tell the difference in genres. And when's the last time there was a song out that didn't feature another artist? What happened to standing alone? First it sampling in every song, now there are "guest stars" like these are TV shows, I don't want to dream what's coming next. Good thing we can always revist the past though CD, downloads, etc.

i guess Metallica... the purely between the more moderen bands i truly love and appreciate. Nirvana has some solid stuff and were very influential... yet I choose Metallica in each and every way. besides them... i'm so stuck contained in the 70's 80's.....even as it includes rock. (i replaced into born contained in the 60's). chuffed 2008 edit ... i'm satisfied you want and celebrate with red Floyd a lot besides as different bands... I understand what you propose and easily time will tell which of the bands will live on the try of time... i'm particular Metallica, guns N´Roses, Lenny Kravitz and Nirvana will sound besides in 30 years as they do now.

Hmm.
To answer your question, I think that 'then's' music and 'now's' music are really quite something.
The lack of whatever you're getting is much different than from us.
Your problem is that you came from a different range and/or style then from what we were brought on.
People have different tastes, different opinions and quite frankly you're not as excepting as other fantastic people.
Some kids/adults might like alternative and that's fine to me.
Other kids might like something a bit harder and more tempting to just thrash around and waste away.
I don't care for people like you, because you're probably just trying to defend and preserve what you like.
Become broader.
Actually /listen/ to some other kinds of bands/singers.
Read lyrics.
There's a lot in store for you but if you don't, I don't mind.
I'm not as stuck up and pin-straight.

And now, if you're going to just ditch this, a few words of advice.
Stay away from any rap-filled music.
You're not going to like it.

ya i agree todays music pretty much sucks, with very very few exceptions. but pj isnt just of the past they are rockin hard now. pj and u2 are still awesome to see live. those guys are pretty much all i listen to now. if anything else its older stuff with talent like you said, like alice in chains, nirvana, i like neil young and the who and a little dead. dave matthew is decent, i dont like the new cd though. but i definitely agree that most of the crap on the radio sucks for sure. i usually just listen to cds, or ok pearl jam, everyone teases me about that,, cause i never get sick of em. but if i get anything out of listening to the radio these days, its inspiration , because truly anyone can do it, i would actually be embarassed to say i was a singer now adays because theres no talent involved

Yeah you speak the truth. BUT I am a sucker for popular music...I mean sometimes I will start out hating a song and then after the 657th time I hear it in a day I find my self singing along. I guess that means the record companies are doing their jobs.

I wouldn't say that all of today's music is terrible. Some of it is really good. Then again, there was some really terrible music in the 80's as well. In fact, I'm pretty sure that every decade has had it's fair share of awful music, nowadays all they play from past decades is the good music, so we are spared of all the hideous music from the past. I like a lot of modern stuff, but I feel sorry for the kids that were getting into music while I was in college (98-02) - THAT was an absolutely dreadful period. Rock/rap & boy bands...*shudder*

I'm 25 and yes, some singers sound the same to me (like Christina Aguerilia - sp? really gets on my nerves). Other bands aren't bad though. Just depends on who it is.
