You can only use the points to ask questions. The more points you have, the more questions you can ask per day and the more questions you can answer per day. When you get to level 5 (5000 points), you can ask and answer unlimited amount of questions. But other than these features, the points cannot do anything else

The points move you up in rank. The higher rank you are, the more questions you can ask and answer per day. Also, the higher rank you are, you are awarded prizes from Yahoo! Click the number of points by your name in the box at the left, to see how it works!

The point system allows you to ask and answer more questions the higher points you have. If you go to your Q&A page then it has a link that explains it.
