Here's your answer.
It goes back to the Contract with America. Republicans successfully nationalized the congressinal elections by making 10 "contract points", saying they would present these 10 things to congress if elected for a vote, in an attempt to throw out the liberal "old guard".
They did exactly what they said they would do. And it was great.
Here's the problem. Most of them stuck around. Slowly, they became influenced by being inside the beltway.
Now, they are the "old guard" with all the power. And while power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
I consider myself someone with conservative values, but I do not consider myself a Republican. If more conservatives took that stand, the "conservative" politicians would never turn their back on the principals they win elections on.
Here's the cold hard truth, my fellow conservatives: Republican or Democrat, all they are concerned with, sooner or later, is staying in office.
The difference between us and the liberals though, is that we are not consumed by power, subjective truth, and Godlessness, we are concerned with freedom, liberty, and morality. That's what makes it doubly tough when we sense those who stood up for our concerns seem to be casting them aside.

Reagan was a Neocon. They were pissed off over Bobby Kennedy spooking them out in the open over the Communist party. Reagan made up a huge smoke screen to cover all of the outsourcing America is experiencing presently. Reagan unemployed America through the Unions first with lay offs in the 80's to allow the rich to overcome the middle class and the Union votes against them. You can obviously see the results can't you?

Sure it has. Look at stem cell research. Nancy is for it, the religous right and Bush are against it.
As has been pointed out by Reagan's son (Ron, not the nazi one) his dad didn't pander to the religous right. Unlike Bush, Reagan kept them in mind but didn't act as their puppet. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Reagan supporter. He committed a great number of travesties and perpetuated human suffering with his ignorance on AIDS until Hollywood gal pal E. Taylor got him to show a bit of compassion. Still in retrospect, I know Reagan would have listened to wiser counsel than the current idiot and thereby avoided the untold miseries and suffering the current one has unleashed upon mankind.

Hijacked.
I disagree with both philosophies, but at least Reagan was a right-wing libertarian.
The new right wing is more like a sports team or a brand. They don't really stand for anything other than winning. Their actions have internal inconsistency.

Nope, just natural evolution. Republican Neanderthals evolve into Republican hunter gatherers and then into Republican Bushites.
