Lee J aparantly thinks that chinchilla's are dogs.

I recently got my first chinchilla. I did get it from a pet store & he's in great shape. I do know that there are a few vets that dont work with this type of animal & you do have to go to an "exotic animal" vet. Mine does both & the office visit would be the same as if I brought in a dog or a cat.

As for vaccinations, I was under the impression that out of all of the small animals, ferrets were the only animals that required a vaccine (distemper). Most of the time, if you get a sick chinchilla, a simple (and relatively inexpensive) antibiotic does the trick.

Chinchilla's are extremely intelligent creatures. Since you are educated in their care, I expect that you shouldnt run into any major problems. A serious injury in a chinchilla can run you the same amount as if you were treating a dog or a cat, not any more $$ because they are considered an exotic pet.

Good luck & enjoy your chin!

Chinchillas don't need vaccines. A healthy Chinchilla shouldn't cost much in vet care. Make sure it is eating well, dusting normally, happy and active. Check it's teeth...they keep growing and may over grow if there is a malocclusion problem. Get him checked out when you first get him and then follow your vets recommendations. Exam visit price will vary by the vet.

This is a very open ? as it depends on the health of your animal. First of all do not by from a pet shop but from a reputable breeder as pet shop dogs come from mostly puppy farms, 90% of these dogs have health problems and you will end up spending a fortune. If you have a heathly dog then really you should only need to have one vet visit per year for his/her annual check up and vaccination. You will need to get them sterilsed which is roughly $120 and heartworm/worming tablets which depends on your dogs weight, but having an animal is not cheap but soooo worth it!!

Oh... that is not possible to estimate because you do not know fo what type of problems, if any, the chinchilla will develop.
