I keep hearing about evolution this and that. I thought it had been proven as fact. Does anybody have any evidence to back up this claim?

One, nothing in science is really 'proven' because you can not test every situation. Even Newtons laws have loop holes that Einstien found. Everything in Science is a theory, but for it to become a theory it needs to stand up to the test of time. And Evolution is the most contiversial theory, yet it is still concidered a valid theory and that is saying something concidering how many people have gone after it.

While evolution has been proven, and has been accepted as the most powerful and descriptive theory in the entire field of biology, it has not proven the bible wrong at all.

There are a few passages in the bible which are simply physically not possible if taken as literally true. This does not mean that the overall message of the bible is false, incorrect, or even possible to be 'disproved'.

Evolution hasn't disproved the bible any more than physics, geology, chemistry, history or linguistics have.

UPDATE:

There still seems to be incredible confusion about what a scientific theory is, and what a scientific fact is. A fact is a single observed phenomenon. No explanation, simply observation. A theory is the explanation for the reasons behind that observation. A theory which fits all the known facts and has not been disproved is accepted as true. For example, you have a dead body. There is a large hole in the dead body's head. Those are facts. On closer examination you discover a lead projectile similar to those fired from certain pistol firearms embedded in the body's brain. Your theory is that the body was once alive, and was killed when he was shot in the head with a bullet fired from a pistol. This theory fits all of the facts, and unless someone comes up with contradictory evidence, the theory is accepted as the most likely explanation for the dead body with the hole in the head.

For evolution, we not only have the body and the bullet, we have matched the bullet to a specific pistol, have the serial of the pistol, fingerprints on the handle of the pistol, three hundred people who heard the shot, tire tracks from the getaway vehicle, the license plate of the vehicle, make and model, driver's registration (which matches the pistol registration), a red light camera capturing the exact time of the get away, fifteen character witnesses who will testify that the suspect and the victim were arguing, and gun powder residue on the suspect's hands. While we don't have an actual witness to the events, and no one saw the actual bullet was fired, the theory has withstood every test, and is generally accepted as true. Evolution actually has a lot more evidence for its veracity than the example given here, yet some people refuse to accept it because it means they might (horrors) be somewhat related to apes.

Not quite. No scientific theory can ever be regarded as proven fact: sometime, someone may stumble on a counterexample, disproving the theory as written and requiring that it be modified. But a scientific theory can become established, meaning that it is used by workers in the field to make predictions that they find useful (i.e., correct). The theory of evolution is as solidly established as any theory in science, which isn't surprising because its basis is remarkably simple, consisting of only two elements:
- Genetic variation happens from time to time, such that a daughter life form is genetically different from its parent. Data: almost every commercially important plant or animal is a genetic variant of the original wild type, in some cases so different that the variant is no longer sexually compatible with the original wild type. I.e, it's a new species.
- Selection, either by nature or man, to select for propagation those variants which have more capacity to survive and reproduce [nature], or have other traits, such as increased milk production, which people consider useful.

Now the fact that evolution is solidly established is grounds for accepting it, even if there were no other evidence in favor of it. But of course there is, and it is overwhelming. There is an excellent tutorial in this forum: llook for a question by haterhater and a response by EmilyRose in May 2006 for all the details. For a longer dissertation (which is fascinating reading), see Dawkins' The Ancestor's Tale.

The mark of a scientific theory is that it refutable -- that it could be demonstrated to be wrong. It can be proven that the predictive power of any theory obtains exclusively from its refutability. When we look at ideas such as creationism or intelligent design, we see that these are not refutable: they could well be correct, but there are no observable consequences if they are wrong. Hence, such theories are useless: they can predict nothing.

It is interesting to note that a scientific theory can become established and yet be wrong. Newtonian mechanics is an example of this. At low speeds, it works just fine, but near the speed of light, it doesn't work worth beans and you have to use Einstein's mechanics. Still, if you are designing an automobile or a spacecraft, Newton works well enough to do the job.

Yes again and again and again... but deeply religous people of judaism, christianity, and islam refuse to see it and deny these proven facts.... evidence to back it up?
According to the bible the earth is about 5000 years old... why then are their dinosaur fossils hundreds of millions of years old...
And to the the people overthinking the use of the word scientific THEORY-a scientific theory is a FACT proven by a community of scientists the reason it is called a theory is because it can be constantly updated, for example certain medicines were accepted in the 1950s as being useful where as today there are completely new medicines for the same sicknesses, they are constantly being updated.

Evolution is a scientific THEORY.. not a scientific Fact

there is a huge difference between the two.

and even if this theory is proven and becomes fact as i believe will happen. It does not prove the Bible wrong. the two (the bible and Evolution) can complement themselves if looked at from a certain point of view as many people already do.

Not a really fair question, but I understand. Evolution is a therory, the temperature in New Delhi at noon on July 24th is a fact. In Science, facts are mostly indisputable, but theories as complex as evolution are available for change with new input and newly discovered facts. You may never change somebody's mind about the Bible... because it holds everything they consider to be fact. Evolution is well supported and much has been based on the theory (as an assumed fact) to search for proofs. We must await an irrefutable proof on evolution, but much of the evidence tells free-thinking people and scientists that it has merit.

Only mountains of scientific evidence if you would just read it and understand it.
Well, understand this, since this brilliant revelation of our origin, it has stood up to the test of time and the immense and complicated scientific scrutiny of the most intelligent modern minds and not ONCE has any credible scientist with a true scientific mind (not one that seeks evidence based on a bias) has ever refuted the basic tenets of evolution. NOT ONE.
furthermore, it will NEVER occur that any evidence (which there is none) will regress to discovering something so bizarre and irrational as to think the earth and universe is less than 10,000 years old, they would have to throw out mountains and stockpiles of evidence, all their intellectual capabilities and logic and take an astounding leap of faith.

I believe in both. I believe god created science. there are some parts of the bible that are stories that we can learn from. I don't believe all the stories in the bible are true. The water came to earth by many meteors hitting the earth billions of years ago. that is how the oceans were formed. then when pangea broke up it created the contenents that are present today. if you believe in earthquakes then you have to believe in evolution. because when pangea broke up it left fossils on the edges of each continent and you can put the pieces back together like a puzzle. don't know if this makes much since but i hope it helps..

Yes, the bible is wrong about how the DIVERSITY of life occurs. The Theory of Evolution is the best explanation as to how life forms change over time. Evolution does not try to answer how the first life originated - that's a question for physicists and chemists as well as biologists.

Evolution is an accepted theory. The Bible was proven wrong when they told you a man could walk on water.

Quite the contrary, science has never been able to prove evolution, and even Mr. Darwin, as he got older, said that he didn't think his theory of evolution could be supported by science. Research it for yourself and find the answers for yourself. You should be informed, no matter what you believe, because this debate has been going on for so long.
