It is possible depending on which laptop you by from which manufacturer. Companies like Dell offer only pre-built machines that stays basically the same as you first bought it. If you don't mind a price hike, then buying from custamizable companies like AlienWare allows for greater versatility of you machine. As long as the laptop cleary states it runs on a separate card for video, then you should be able to replace it.

Just as a side note, nVidia introduced duo video chips in one laptop a little while back. If you haven't already heard about it, visit nVidia's website.

Anything is possible if it's within reason. Meaning if you have a laptop that has a video card that can be upgradable, then you can do so. This option usually comes with laptops designed strictly as gaming PCs.

But for most laptops, the video card is part of the motherboard itself. Therefore it's impossible to simply upgrade the video card itself (being that it's not really a card).

No, it's not, at least not in mainstream laptops. Now on select Dell and Alienware laptops, it is possible but the upgrade has to be performed by them as you cannot do it yourself.
