When was the last time you did your Windows Updates? Often times this takes care of the dreaded red x problem. Also, you may try to choose "View" then "Encoding" and change what you are using, perhaps to Western European Windows or Western ISO..maybe that will help :)

What platform are you using? Mac, Windows, Linux, Solaris? Also, what explorer are you using if you're using windows? Internet Explorer, Firefox? Tell me this and I can help you.
You might have your security settings turned up too high.
