I've left fly masks on for days and remove them only when its raining. I'm able to visually check my horses everyday -even if I'm not in the pasture with them. Additionally, the flys masks I use close with velcro and if the horses get caught on something, the velcro gives way and the mask comes off. I also use fly boots to keep the flies off of one of my horse's legs, because he has athritis and can't feel the biting - so, doesn't stomp. I only use the fly sheet if they flys are particularly bad and only use the sheet on my arthritis guy. The other horses do a good job at stomping and moving around so that the flies don't bother them as much.
You may want to consider some sort of fly preventative, like a feed through fly control (if possible). I use Solitude IGR which is new to the market but it works great! Its not perfect because my neighbors have horses and don't use anything, but if they did we would be really well off with minimal flies.
Also, saw in a horse magazine that a woman uses fly sheets to hang in the doorways to her barns and trailer to keep flys from coming in and out. They allow breezes and horses in, but keep flys out by hanging in the doorways.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

We leave ours on all day, but there is a person at the barn at all times to keep watch on the horses that are turned out. At night they go out with no fly mask or halter, 1 because of saftey and 2 b/c the bugs aren't that bad at night. Make sure u shop around, some fly masks have like fleasy edges that can get really hot on the horse, but really light weight ones (we love the Cashel Cruisader (supper durable too), they don't tend to sweat as much in them.

You can leave them on all day, provided they will be checked regularly to make sure that they are not falling off, or torn, pulling, or rubbing. I have seen some pretty bad accidents involving fly masks and halters that are left on without being checked. If you can't get to them to check them twice daily, it might be worth buying a spray or cream that can be used to keep the flies off. i have bought a cream insect repellant from my saddlery shop for flies that used to bite my dogs ears. It works all day (provided it doesn't rain excessively) and also has an antiseptic for the bites that were already present. Of course, take care when applying it around the eyes or nose, as this can be harmfull to your horse.
Talk to your shop assistant about which one would suit you best.

I used to race rodeos, and my therory is if the flies are out and biting leave the masks on. Rather be safe than sorry. We had a Palomino that had a large cluster of fly bite by his eye they got infected (even though we were treating them) and the infection went to his brain and he past away. Use your best judgement (but keep that story in mind) I hope I helped a little

The closest Yahoo! Answers has ever come to suggesting the right class (in relation to the pony phase) is 'Horse Racing'. UGH! My dream horse might be a dapple gray, eleven 12 months ancient Hanoverian PSG schoolmaster. Woot.

Don't know about fly masks, but the cream called SWAT kept the flies from biting my dogs backs and ears. I have a friend that lost a horse to leaving a halter on her over night...got caught in the hay ring....we never left halters or such on our horses...we used SWAT....rub it around their eyes...careful not to get it in the eyes!
Good luck

You can leave them on all day. I put mine on my horses early in the morning when i turn them out and then i take them off at night when i am putting them back in their stalls. Always make sure to check them for any damages , and clean them when they need it.
