I have five stone pine trees=the kind that will eventually produce pine nuts. Three are in pots and two I planted in the ground this spring. I have had them two years. The ones in the pots are twice as big as the ones in the ground, yet were the same size at the beginning.

I've got ficus, dwarf citrus, lemon & lime, pine trees and crepe myrtle. The ficus is started out as a five gallon plant five years ago and had to go in the ground because it is now two stories high. The dwarf citrus started out as 5 gallon plants 2 years ago and they are both still in pots and about 6 feet tall. Ironically, neither have produced fruit yet. One pine was my first Christmas tree when I married my hubby 16 years ago and also started out in a five gallon pot. I planted it in the ground 8 years ago and the tree is 4 stories high now. The other two pines, a monterey pine and spruce, both started as gallon plants have been in the ground for 3 and 5 years respectively and both are right at about 6 feet tall. The monterey pine seems particularly slow growing as compared with my other pines. Both seem to be on a growth spurt right now and have 2 ft of new growth this year. Ficus do very well in pots, both inside and outside. I'm in zone 8-9 though.
