About 4 days ago I dropped a heavy plate on my big toe's nail. I whent to the hospital because I thought I broke my toe, because it was blue, and hurting like ****.
So they wanted to poke a hole in the nail, but i said no freakin way lol. Whent home and suffered for the next 3 days. Now the toe and nail are all blue, and very red. My nail is starting to come up, and I imagine it will fall off in the near future. I'm worried I'm getting an infection, but I was seen only 4 days ago and they said it was fine, only it will be VERY VERY painfull for the next couple weeks.
Has any one ever had this happen to them, and what are the signs that somethings not right?

They wanted to put a hole in your toe nail to help alleviate the pressure that you are now dealing with. Your nail will fall off though I don't know exactly how long it will take. Keep an eye on it. If it starts to smell funny, definitely go back to see the doctor (a sign of it not being right). In the meantime to prevent infection, you can use tea tree oil on it. I have had my nail come off, not exactly the same way you did, but similar. Everything worked out okay in the end. Good luck!

One, if you start feeling fever/chills that would be the worst and you need to go in right away.
Two if your toe starts to get redder and more hot than the rest of your foot, that would also be bad.
Three If there is redness traveling up your foot in streaks that would be bad.
Four The pain should not be getting worse. Typically the worse day is the second. Increased pain is a sign of infection.
It should be ok, your toenail will fall off within the next week, and it will hurt a lot before that. After it falls off it will be sensitive, but wont hurt much otherwise. It should grow back slowly, and may not be as pretty, but dont worry about not letting them drill a hole.

My now four year old Drop a draw on his toe when he was two and we pop the clot to release the blood and pressure and after it healed and the nail started coming up his dr cut away most of the nail!!
It is probably OK but i would be worried about the redness. it would not hurt to get it checked out again just in case of infection..good Luck i know it hurts!!!

You probably just killed the nail. Once it falls off a new one will grow in its' place. The blue and red is just the bruising (and bleeding) under the nail.
Someday if you can, ask someone who just ran a marathon to look at their toes. Chances are all 10 of their nails will look just like yours does now.

U should have let them drill the hole in the nail. This relieves the pressure from the blood that is all under the nail causing it to be blue and black. Take a pocket knife and drill the hole yourself, this will feel really bad because it will hurt, but I promise, it will relieve the pressure and you will feel better faster.

you should have let them put the hole in the nail. It would have let the blood out and cut the pain. I have trepined myself and I can tell you that it doesnot hurt and it makes the nail feel better! If you are getting and infection, go back to the Dr. and let them do what they need to.

It's infected. It's sore because it's likely that pus and fever have collected under the nail. You need to let the doctor drain the infection as quickly as you can before the infection spreads, hun.

It's already quite obvious it's bad! If it's painful now, soak your leg in ice-cold water. Then try induce blood-circulation around your leg by massaging upwards. Go to a Chinese physician around your area. He may release the clotted blood by pricking your toe with needles or using some other traditional methods. It's necessary to release the bad blood in your toe. Do it before you may suffer even more.

try soaking it in cool water or warm water with epsom salt, take tylenol or aleve. If you see red streaks going up your foot get to a doctor. eventually the nail will fall off and it will feel better.
