Get some scratch and swirl mark remover which is a polish and use it to remove the scratches. If they are real deep scratches you may not be able to remove them. When using the buffer don't press down to hard and be especially careful on edges or you will burn right through the paint. Use a good polishing rag in those areas. If your buffer has the orbital feature use it. I always squirt the polish right on the buffer bonnet but check the polish instructions to make sure. After you do that and clean up any residue then put on the wax. Use a good microfiber towel to wipe off the dried wax. They are available almost anywhere. Once again stay away from the edges with the buffer and do them by hand. Hope this helps.

You will need a buffing compound to go with you buffer to take out scratches. Just follow the instructions on the can. The compound has wax in it to fill scratches and to buff up after use.

Don't do it!!! Go to a local detail shop and ask if you can observe when they wheel out a car. Tell them what you told us; you're trying to learn technique. Observation is the best teacher. You can burn a paint job in no time, and that looks a lot worse than the scratches do. Also, they will probably have some good recommendations on what type of polish or rubbing compound to use.
Be patient. It takes time to master a polishing wheel. Get a friend with an old beater who's not too concerned with how it looks to let you practice on it. Then, with that knowledge in hand, try your own ride.
Good Luck

If your not real familiar with using a buffer, you might want to try buffing it out by hand, because you can "burn " the paint real quick. I would try some rubbing compound using your hand, follow the instruction's on the can....then follow it up with some good "non cleaning" wax.

keep in mind that if you can scrape your nail along the scratch and you can feel it, the compounds and waxes wont be able to take the scratch out. They can only make it less obvious.
