Well, reading the answers above me, I might try it with one rack because I'm sick of doing it by hand with fumey oven cleaner and SOS pads. My KitchenAid Double Convection Wall Oven Owner's and Instruction manual says specifically to take out all of the oven racks when operating the self-cleaning mode. It does not say why.

You can, however, they will discolor, lose their shine, and become hard to slide in and out. If you do leave them in, afterward rub the
edges of the racks and of guides on oven walls with soapy-steel wool pad, wipe off, and then rub few drops of salad oil on edges for easier sliding. It's probably better to take racks out before cleaning cycle and clean them by hand.

I leave them in but if they are really dirty you can put them into a trash bag, pour a bottle of ammonia in the trash bad and tie it shut. Lay it ouside flat in the hot sun for an afternoon. Take the racks out and rinse them off and they are good as new. It is amazing how this works!

Go ahead! If any food is stuck to them, it will be cleaned along with the rest of the oven.

Always follow the manufacturers directions. It's been my experience that they should be removed. If you leave them in, it will discolor them to a dull gray and you will never get them to shine again. It may also make them very difficult to clean later if something spills over on them. It also makes them harder to slide in and out.

you can, but they will be hard to slide in and out. To fix this you can wipe the outside edges with an SOS pad. That will clean off the residue and make them slide a lot easier.
