Out of personal experience, I've seen other people who were lazy get promoted when I was the one that was actually busting my a**. I could see that being a reason why someone would get jealous, so to say. I wouldn't say that in my experience that I was necessarily jealous, but I felt very disappointed in my company more than anything because there were other people (even aside from myself) that deserved a better position.

Many people are both competitive and greedy. They want everything, and they want it for themselves. They like events where there is a clear winner and loser, and they like to win. When a co-worker gets promoted, they are the clear loser because their co-worker gets more income and responsibility than them, and they feel passed up, like the girl who no one asked to the prom.

They don't Get mad if you earn the promotion because of your work record, but they hate BROWN NOSERS WHO get where they got by squealing on co-workers.

Survival of the fitess...it make them realize that on some level they are slightly inferior...you are making you way up before them. Your leaving them behind. On a deep, deep level that is.

They probably wanted the position and extra income. Duh. They are co workers not friends. Even if there friendly to each other because they have to deal with each other 40+ hours a week. Duh.
